Kennedy suffers the first election loss by a member of the Kennedy family in Massachusetts. Commenting on his unsuccessful challenge to the incumbent, Boston University professor Thomas Whalen subsequently notes, “The Kennedys are classic line-cutters. From the very beginning they have gone by their own time tables, and they don’t start out running for the city council.”
